What’s Your Legacy?

I went to a funeral this week. I’ve blessed enough to not even remember the last time that I attended a funeral before now. It was so long ago and I was so small that I barely remember it at all. But this week there I was, among a crowd of people saying goodbye to someone that we’ll never see again here on this earth.

Making the Most of 2016

I’m excited this New Years. I can just tell that 2016 is going to be a year of greatness. I know we do this every year, make resolutions that we may or may not actually follow through with, but any chance to try and have a fresh start is one worth taking. Resolutions are not about us running from our old selves or pretending to be someone we’re not. They’re an opportunity to dare to try again, to want something more for our lives, and to be the person we’ve been striving to become. We need to stop convincing ourselves that we’re not worth a second chance at greatness. If you’re honest with yourself you know you’re still hoping for more than what you had in 2015. And so am I.  Continue reading “Making the Most of 2016”

How I’m Learning Life Lessons in Marcus Garvey Park

“This here is our own little piece of heaven.”

He looked out over the crowded park chess tables like a king proudly showing off his kingdom. He had a crown full of white hair and sat on the weathered green park bench like it was his own personal throne. He looked old enough to be my grandfather and had a face just as kind. At the time, I hadn’t known him for long but from what I could tell he had a life full of experiences behind him. I could only imagine all the knowledge he had to share. Midweek Meditation: Why I’ve Been Dreading Graduation

Its only September and my mind is already in overdrive thinking about a day that’s still 8 months away: Graduation. Continue reading “Midweek Meditation: Why I’ve Been Dreading Graduation”

2 Quick Tips On How to Avoid Burnout This Semester

For some of us the new school year has begun, which means new notebooks, fresh paper and shiny new pens. If your anything like me the new-school-year excitement is likely to soon fade into stress and exhaustion. Its easy to let reading assignments, papers and general school anxiety bury us and become overwhelming… unless we do something to avoid it. NYC Summer Bucket List: The Summer that Never Sleeps

Summer is here, which means the days of flip flops, ice cream cones, and longs walks on the beach are upon us. With a million things to do in the city and only so many summer days to spare, my friends and I decided that we needed a summer bucket list (obviously!). Continue reading “NYC Summer Bucket List: The Summer that Never Sleeps”

Eyes Wide Shut: How to Stop Missing Out On What Really Matters

Most of my days look the same.

Wake up. Check phone. Go to class. Go home. Absorb Netflix from my couch. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.

We’re all guilty of it: being wrapped up in our daily routine and moving through each day the same as the last. Most of the time we get away with it. That is, we get away with it until we crash into something that makes us realize that we’ve been running on autopilot without a clue about what’s going on around us. Homecoming Means Coming Home

Two weeks ago I went to my college’s homecoming. Decked out in our school colors and packing as much school pride as possible, alums and current students flocked to campus to cheer on our team and revisit their college experience, if only for a weekend.

Some people have said that college was the best four years of their life. I’m only five months out, but I would like to believe that isn’t true. I would hope that things just keep getting better from here.   Continue reading “Homecoming Means Coming Home”

Empire State of Mind

“It’s just the Empire State Building.”

Blaring horns, howling sirens, and flashing lights. People pushing past me as they scrambled to catch their train. The peddlers on the street trying to sell things that no one actually needs… I stood there on the sidewalk staring at it like only a true tourist would. It wasn’t that I had never seen it before. My mind was simply blown by the idea that I could now see it whenever I wanted … Because I live here. Continue reading “Empire State of Mind”
