Things My Natural Hair Taught Me About Life

I still remember the day I had my  Big Chop. I had just finished my freshmen year of college. A few hours after turning in my last final I was sitting in an old wooden chair at a friend’s house, the pair of scissors in her hand hovering above my head as she prepared to make the first cut. Flash forward five years to today and I am still navigating this natural hair journey while learning some unexpected life lessons along the way. Midweek Meditation: The Waiting

Current Read/ Year of Yes, by Shonda Rhimes

Current Listen/ “Whole” by Jonathan McReynolds featuring India.Arie

Current Love/ My new Canon Rebel T6s (!)

I’m in transition. I’m in between. I’m waiting.

We’ve all been there, partway between your last adventure and your next challenge. I’ve finished my summer job and a week ago and I’m waiting for my next one to begin. Honestly, I’ve never been a fan of waiting. I don’t like long lines, it bothers me when people walk slowly in front of me, and I rarely wait for my food to cool down enough for me to not burn my mouth when eating it. I have a habit of being impatient, but lately, I’ve been learning that patience really is a virtue. Continue reading “Midweek Meditation: The Waiting”

How I Caught the Travel Bug – True Confessions of an Addict

The first time I traveled out the country by myself I was nineteen years old. My college had a winter January semester called Winter Study when every student would take a class, study abroad, or do an internship off campus. During my sophomore year Winter Study I was fortunate enough to be recommended by one of my professors to do a language immersion course in Guatemala for the month. I still remember sitting on the plane to Guatemala City. I was alone, going to a country whose language I had had nowhere near mastered and planning to stay with a host who I had never met. All I remember thinking was “what in the world did I just get myself into?” Long story short, that month in Guatemala changed my life and I have never been the same since. Weekend Wanderlust: The Museum of Ice Cream

This weekend’s adventure? The Museum of Ice Cream. The usual suspects and I spent a night tasting sweets, rolling around in a pool of sprinkles, and swinging on a giant ice cream sandwich. Nbd. Continue reading “Weekend Wanderlust: The Museum of Ice Cream”

Unafraid NYC Summer Bucket List 2016

Its July!! Once again its the season of cookouts, outdoor movies, ice cream cones and sunsets on the beach. To be honest, last year my friends and I didn’t finish everything on the 2015 summer bucket list, but I figure that’s okay because we can pick up right where we left off. So here’s this year’s list of summer shenanigans we’re hoping to get done:

Midweek Meditation – Slow Down. Calm Down.

“Slow down. Calm down. Don’t worry. Don’t hurry. Trust the process.”

-Alexandra Stoddard

Two weeks ago I was walking through Chelsea Market with my roommate when a card in Posman Books caught my eye. Neatly printed across the front was this quote from Alexandra Stoddard that I had never heard before. The words sounded like the exact opposite of the life I’ve been living. I almost laughed as I realized that in the 20 seconds that I had been standing there at least two people had almost bumped into me as they hurried on to their destination, but not before giving me a dirty look for being in their way. Its almost a rule that you don’t stay still in New York City.

Unafraid Life Lessons – February 2016

I sat down a few days ago and realized that I’ve learned a lot over the last 30ish days. Its easy to just keep moving forward without thinking twice about the past month, but I think its important to take a moment and reflect. So let’s look back, shall we?
